Map news

A new online resource called Old Maps Online has just been launched. Described as “the broadest single collection of historical maps from around the world”, it provides access to a vast collection of maps held by institutions across the world. The site incorporates access to collections at the British Library, the National Library of Scotland, the Moravian Library in the Czech Republic and the prestigious David Rumsey Collection in California. Other collections to be added later in 2012 will include those from Harvard University, the New York Public Library, the National Library of Wales, the Bodleian Library at Oxford and several major European libraries.

Meanwhile at the National Library of Scotland, the map library has just unveiled the results of their largest ever map digitisation project forming the Ordnance Survey’s most detailed topographic mapping of Scotland from the 1890s to the 1940s.

NLS Map Library says: “These maps are immensely valuable for local history, allowing practically every feature in the landscape to be shown. You can zoom into the detail of the maps using an interactive index map, and search by county, parish and a gazetteer of place names.” Explore the map series online and discover 17,466 sheets of 25 inch to the mile maps of Scotland from 1892 to 1949.
